Behind the Beat: SIROJ

Have you ever heard of ‘Slop’ music? This is the genre of music that Dutch DJ and producer, SIROJ, describes as the blend of House and Hip-Hop. SIROJ has been a long time co-producer of Yellow Claw and has recently released music on the Barong Family label alongside artists like Chace. SIROJ certainly brings a new dynamic to the hard trappy style and represents the diversification and expansion of the label.

SIROJ’s music from his “We Dem Boyz Jump To It” Edit to anything off his Marble EP will give you a flavor for his sound. SIROJ also recently went Behind the Beat for an exclusive interview.

Only The Beat: Take us back. Where was your first official gig?

SIROJ: Whoa, I can’t even tell. It’s too long ago. I think one of my first gigs was at a party during Queensday which is a national holiday in the Netherlands. That’s definitely one of my first gigs. Fun fact: Jim and Nils where also playing. This was way before Yellow Claw started.

OTB: Who or what has been most inspirational or helpful in your music career?

SJ: It’s kind of a cliché but collaborating with my peers is the most inspiring thing to do. When I get to do a session with a producer for instance the guys from the Barong Family label it’s always so much fun because there’s a chemistry which always results in a cool idea.

OTB: If you had to pick another career?

SJ: I probably become a manager.

OTB: What is your favorite track the you produced and one that you did not produce?

SJ: Tough one! Right now my favorite track is the one I did with Chace which is called ‘Fire’ because it’s fire. 😉 My current favorite right now of songs I didn’t produce must be ‘Slide‘ by Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos.

SIROJ & Chace – Fire

OTB: You just released your Marble EP on Barong Family. Can you tell us a little bit about the EP?

SJ: Yeah, Jim always asked me to do an EP on Barong Family. But because my sound is a bit different from everything they put out it didn’t really made sense to me. But, after the latest releases by Fountain of Youth and Chace it felt like it was the right time to put something out. I think this EP is a typical SIROJ project which is a mix between House and Hip-Hop which I like to call ‘Slop’. There are even some disco references.

OTB: You did a recent collaboration with Chace and contributed to the new Yellow Claw album Los Amsterdam. Can you tell us about these projects?

SJ: When Chace came to Holland for the first time we did a few sessions which resulted in Fire. We produced and wrote the song together and he’s such an amazing talent. Me and Yellow Claw go way back ever since they started. So, I’ve co-produced songs for them ever since ‘DJ Turn It Up‘ on the Amsterdam Twerk EP and ‘Till it Hurts‘. Then I’ve co-produced a few songs on there first album such as ‘In My Room‘. Pretty much right after the ‘Blood For Mercy’ album was out we started making beats and demos for Los Amsterdam. I’ve co-produced on ‘Invitation‘ and ‘Open’ for instance and both songs where made pretty quick after BFM came out.

OTB: What advice do you have for an aspiring DJ that is trying to get a shot in the industry?

SJ: Try to find your own thing. It can be difficult and it’s a constant struggle. Tell me about it.

OTB: Where do you see the dance music industry going in the next five years? New technology? Changes?

SJ: I feel its going back to the music. Calvin Harris is already doing it again.

OTB: What is the top personal milestone in your music career so far?

SJ: Everything is. Cliché I know. But that i’m able to put out music, entertain people, support my family, travel and go places and all of that.

OTB: What can we expect from you this year and big releases, collaborations, shows?

SJ: I’m currently working on new music for my upcoming projects and i’m also definitely going to collaborate a lot more with Barong Family artists and Yellow Claw.
