Your Story: Dance music from Kenya to Philly
Our newest writer Snehal shares her journey with dance music in the latest edition of ‘Your Story’.
I moved to Kenya in 2009, this was when I was first exposed to dance music. When people think of Kenya the first thing that comes to their mind is probably The Lion King. When I think of Kenya all I can think about is the dance scene. Dance culture in Kenya is unparalleled to others, the vibes are so positive and raw, I have yet to experience something like that here.
Local artists thrived in Kenya, they almost had a cult-like feel. When I first moved there I was a little skeptical and didn’t know what to think about electronic music but I started going to local shows and events where I got to appreciate and learn about the culture of dance music.
The first time dance music had a massive impact on me was on the last day of my junior year of high school. My best friend and I were driving home from an event and had been talking about how the future seemed to unclear and despairing. Right then ‘Strobe’ by Deadmau5 came on the radio and we rolled down our windows and just let go of our worries (figuratively of course). We felt elated and at that moment I knew “this illegal computer sound was gonna be my calling” (All about the house music-Noir).
I went to college in Philadelphia where the electronic scene was and still is at an all-time high. So many talented producers hail from Philly, Dotcom, Slushii, G-Buck just to name a few. I started going to shows, promoting them and was truly immersed in the culture. Dance music is special because the culture it brings with it is incomparable to others. Every time I go to a show or festival I’m amazed by how friendly and caring most showgoers are. The people, the artists and the music are what made me fall in love with dance music.
